This Flesh is Mine

THEATRE WORK

I received an Award from the Arts Council to write this new play - which has its roots in Homer's
Iliad.

London-based Border Crossings are producing the play in 2014 in a co-production with Ashtar Theatre, based in Ramallah, Palestine. It will be seen in London and, later in the year, in Ramallah. Details of dates and venue will be posted here shortly.

This Flesh is Mine

ABOUT THE PLAY

The play has its roots in The Iliad, but is essentially exploring the contemporary experiences of people living under states of siege in the Middle East and those in the UK who are affected by events in the Middle East.

In June 2013, Michael Walling (director of Border Crossings) and I went to Beirut to work with
Zoukak Theater Company in a week-long series of workshops, which used material drawn from The Iliad as a starting point.

In August and September I led a series of workshops in London in collaboration with Lucy Dunkerley (Education Officer and Associate Director of Border Crossings). These workshops in London and Beirut explored responses to specific moments in
The Iliad and to the current situation in the Middle East; and proved invaluable in developing the play.

This Flesh is Mine explores notions of honour, obsession and self delusion, whilst seeking possibilities for humanity and reconciliation in long term cycles of revenge.

From the outset I conceived the play as needing a cast comprised of different nationalities. This was why I approached Border Crossings (who produced
Double Tongue), a company which specifically focuses on creating ‘new intercultural theatre in response to the contemporary globalised world’.

The British Council in Beirut funded the workshop process with Zoukak.
